I didnât want to do that. I wasnât ready to say goodbye to him for fear Iâd never see him again. My instinct said heâd never call me, and if I called him, he might hesitate to answer. I showed my desperation.
âDo you like baseball?â
âYeah, I do! Itâs really cool Marionville is getting a double A team.â He narrowed his eyes. âWhat?â
I hung my head. âI donât know a thing about baseball.â
âSo why did you ask me if I liked it?â
âWould you like to hang out at my place and watch the game? You can teach me about it.â
He stared at me, lips slightly parted, an enigmatic expression in his eyes. âDo you like anything other besides dogs?â
âI like to ski.â
He glanced at the sky, and then looked at me. âWater or snow?â
I grinned at him. âBoth.â
âThank God. Iâve never been water skiing, but Iâm pretty good on the slopes.â
âI didnât know they had mountains in Peoria,â I quipped, still smiling.
He smirked at me. He was adorable when he wrinkled his nose and rolled his eyes.
âWhen I was a mere lad, we spent every, and I mean every Christmas at my grandfatherâs place in Pennsylvania. I learned to ski. And youâre a smartass, Leon McNamee.â
âAnd youâre just too cute Jeremy Cooke.â
I didnât actually think about it. Maybe if I had, I wouldnât have done it.
I slipped my arm around his shoulders, leaned in, and kissed him.
He started and sucked in a quick breath. Iâd never had anyone go so still in my arms. But he didnât pull away. His lips trembled, and yet he didnât push us apart. I moved my lips over his in a soft caress and ended the kiss.
